Welcome Week 2021

COGS welcomed the Graduate Students community back to the Twin Cities campus, as the University transitions back to in-person modality after more than a year. Between August 28th and September 6th, 2021, we hosted various social and co-curricular events where attendees enjoyed and networked with their fellow graduate students including a happy hour, picnic, free professional headshots, kayaking, online escape room, and a graduate student resource panel!

Please help us keep our attendees and organizers safe by properly wearing masks at all in-person events.

Graduate Happy Hour

Join us for the first COGS Happy Hour of the year on August 28th (Saturday) at the Urban Growler Brewing Co. (2325 Endicott St, St Paul, MN 55114), 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Come socialize with colleagues and meet new graduate students while enjoying some tasty brews and appetizers! This event will be held at an open-air patio, but masks will be required when not eating or drinking. As always, it is BYOB (buy your own beer) but COGS will provide appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages!

Picnic

We’ll have a Graduate Student Picnic on August 29th (Sunday), 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in the Peace Garden at the Commonwealth Terrace Co-op (CTC). We’ll have (free) brats, burgers, vegetable skewers, sides, and ice cream! We’ll also have games for kids. All are welcome, especially UMN grad students, spouses, partners, kids, and friends!

Panel

Excited to start your graduate student career at the UMN, and would like advice on how to thrive? Tune in to the How to be Successful in Grad School panel on August 31st (Tuesday), 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Representatives from the University of Minnesota Libraries, Career Development Services, Student Counselling Services, Career & Internship Services, and Boynton Health will provide resources and tips to successfully navigate your life as a graduate student.

Professional Headshots

COGS has hired a professional photographer to click your professional headshot for free. The event will be held at Coffman Memorial Union (East Bank) on September 1st (Wednesday), 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., and at the St. Paul Student Center on September 2nd (Thursday), 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Kayaking

COGS brings to you Lake Day at Bde Maka Ska (formerly known as Lake Calhoun) on September 3rd (Friday), 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. We will meet at Wheel Fun Rentals (3000 E Calhoun Pkwy, Minneapolis, MN 55408) at 5:00 p.m. Dress warmly as it might feel cold in the middle of the lake. COGS will pay for your canoe/kayak. While the water activity in the lake is pretty safe and you'll get appropriate safety equipment such as life vests, the COGS officers do not take any responsibility for your safety.

Escape Room

We are hosting an online escape room event, in partnership with The Hidden Hour, from September 3rd (Friday) through 6th (Monday). Once started, you will have one hour to solve 8-10 questions and emerge victorious! The game can be played individually, or in teams of up to 5 using an in-built audio chat capability. Registration charges will be covered by COGS, and registration instructions and details will be sent by email on the day of the event. Only one registration per group is necessary.
