1. VP Finance Position
What: VP of Finance position in COGS
When/Where: Election will take place February 9th at the General Assembly Meeting at 5:30pm in the Whole in Coffman Union basement
Why: VP of Finance is in charge of COGS budget and taxes from January-December.  Stipend of $1000/year. The full job description is attached. Please email cogs@umn.edu if you have questions, or to put your name in the running.

2. President's Award for Outstanding Service

What: This award was established to recognize faculty and staff who have provided exceptional service to the University.
When: Nominations are due by March 4th, 2011
Why: This award recognizes exceptional service to the 'university, its schools, colleges, departments and service units by any active or retired member of the faculty or staff. Such service must have gone well beyond the regular duties of a faculty or a staff member, and demonstrate unusual commitment to the University community. 3. Henning's Happy Hour
What: Henning Schroeder, current Dean of the Graduate School provides this open forum to hear from graduate students about issues and concerns. 
When: January 25th 2011 at 5:30pm
Where: Burrito Loco (418 13th Ave. SE)
Why: Having problems in your graduate program and don't know what to do? Instead of complaining to your friends, or your Mom, come along, have an appetizer, and complain to him - he's the one who can fix it.  Students have told him firsthand how they are dealing with low pay, NIH funding caps, and problems with advisors.  To learn more about Henning's perspective on graduate education, go here.

4. SPCO Club 2030 Happy Hour
What: The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra has organized another post-concert Happy Hour where you can schmooze with the composer, conductor, musicians, and special guests all while enjoying free wine and dessert.
When: Friday February 18th, 2011
Where: Concert - Ordway in St. Paul (345 Washington St.), After concert Happy Hour - Hamm Building  (408 St. Peter St., Saint Paul) .

What: COGS General Assembly Meeting
Where: The Whole, basement of Coffman Memorial Union
When: February 9th, 2011 at 5:30pm
Agenda: Special guest Dean Schroeder will be there to talk about the current issues at the U related to graduate education, and we'll be having the VP Finance election. COGS department reps should attend. If your department does not have a rep, it can be you! Email cogs@umn.edu for more information, or just come along. FREE dinner will be served.

May 4, 2010 Please participate in the COGS 2010 Survey on Graduate Student Experience. This is the only broad survey of University of Minnesota graduate students. It is an opportunity for you to help inform the University administration, faculty, and students about the concerns of graduate students, such as funding, advising, student fees, program quality and more. The survey takes about 15-20 minutes to complete (please note that the status bar in the upper left-hand corner of the survey is off by about 20% for the entire survey). April 12, 2010 COGS will host an opportunity to meet and greet the new Dean of Graduate Education, Henning Schroeder. The reception will be held Wednesday, April 21st, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Mississippi Room, Coffman Memorial Union. The winners of the COGS Leadership Award will be announced at this event. Refreshments will be available. Everyone is welcome.

April 5, 2010 The COGS leadership team endorses Devin Driscoll for GAPSA president. Having worked with Devin both as a member of the COGS Executive Committee and as a member of the GAPSA Assembly, we believe that he has demonstrated the maturity and experience to work effectively and professionally to advance the interests of graduate and professional students. April 5, 2010 The election for the 2010-2011 GAPSA president is Monday, April 5th through Wednesday, April 7th. Voting is online at the All Campus Elections Commission online voting Web page.

March 23, 2010 COGS is pleased to announce the first annual COGS Outstanding Faculty Award. March 3, 2010 The COGS Executive Committee published the COGS Response to Recommendations for Graduate Education, COGS' response to the Reports of the Graduate Education Work Groups that were released February 4th, 2010.

February 2010 Comments on the draft Report of the Graduate Education Workgroups are due by March 3rd. E-mail your comments on the draft report to gradcmte@umn.edu

November 30, 2009 Information about applying for COGS Travel Awards and the COGS Leadership Award is now available. See the COGS Awards page for additional information. Applications and nominations are due 5:00 p.m., Friday, March 12th, 2010.

February 2010 The draft recommendation on graduate education have been released and comments are being collected during this 30-day public comment period. The report can be downloaded here

The comments can be made in person at the following feedback sessions:

Feedback can also be sent to the work groups through e-mail: gradcmte@umn.edu. The work groups will review all written and oral comments as they prepare their final report for me which should be released in March 2010.

January 21, 2010 The deadline for proposals in response to the University's Consortium on Law and Values in Health, Environment & the Life Sciences funding opportunity for graduate and professional students at all UofM campuses is February 8th, 2010. This funding initiative aims to encourage work on the broad societal implications of problems in health, environment, or the life sciences. Monday, November 30, 2009 The Graduate Education Academic Issues Work Group student forum is Monday, November 30 at 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. in 238A Morrill Hall. This work group is dealing with academic issues such as fellowships, block grants, advising, governance, program review/approval/closure, and metrics.

October 3, 2009 The Council of Graduate Students and Minnesota Programs and Activities Council (MPAC) are bringing Frank Warren, the founder and creator of PostSecrets, to town Friday, October 23rd. Frank will talk about PostSecrets, its secrets, and the stories behind them at 7:00 pm in the Coffman Union Great Hall. Additional information

June 24, 2009 The UofM Board of Regents approved the 2010 Fiscal Year budget, which increases tuition for graduate students approximately 7.5%. COGS' president Mandy Stahre wrote a response to President Bruininks, Provost Sullivan and the Board of Regents.
